Samuel Rhodes

Samuel Rhodes (* 1941 in New York ) is an American violist, composer and music teacher.

Rhodes studied viola with Sydney Beck and Walter Trampler . He received a bachelor's degree from Queens College and a master's degree from Princeton University , where he was a student of composition with Roger Sessions and Earl Kim . Since 1960 he has participated in the Marlboro Festival . From 1961 to 1969 he was a member of the Galimir String Quartet . He has been teaching at the Juilliard School since 1969 and is a violist in the Juilliard String Quartet . With this he toured Europe, North and South America, the Middle East, Asia, Australia and New Zealand, made recordings for the labels CBS Masterworks , Sony Classical , Wergo and CRI and was awarded three Grammys .

As a guest, Rhodes appeared with the Beaux Arts Trio and the Mannes Trio , the American, Brentano, Cleveland, Galimir, Guarneri, Pro-Arte, Mendelssohn and Sequoia String Quartet. He gave a solo concert in the Library of Congress and premiered compositions by Milton Babbitt and Arthur Weisberg at the Juilliard School . In 2001 he was invited as a soloist to the 10th Viola Space Festival in Tokyo. In 2008 he gave the world premiere of the composition Figment IV for solo viola by Elliott Carter in Paris . Rhodes composed a string quintet that was performed by several well-known string quartets and recorded on CD by the Pro Arte Quartet with the composer as a guest.
