Walter Suermann

Walter Suermann (* 2. August 1939 ) is a German local politician of the CDU and lawyer . From 1980 to 1986 he was Lord Mayor of the Hessian city Offenbach am Main .

Career

After studying law , Suermann received his doctorate in 1971 from the Georg-August University in Göttingen with a thesis on administrative legal protection in the GDR . In the 1970s he was city ​​director in Lehrte .

In 1980 Suermann was elected Lord Mayor of Offenbach am Main as the first and to this day only Christian Democrat (status: November 2015). Since a ballot was unclear when he was re-elected in 1986, a court decision in 1987 on the interpretation of the ballot against re-election ultimately ensured. Suermann's term of office in Offenbach am Main is characterized by the decision to rebuild the Büsing-Palais and the decision to build the Offenbach City Tunnel .

After his time as mayor, Suermann worked as a lawyer. He was also a managing board member of the environmental foundation WWF Germany . From 1991 to 1995 he helped build new municipal structures in Thuringia .

From 1962 to 1964 Suermann was a member of the Fuchs group , which dug several tunnels from West to East Berlin for the purpose of helping people escape. With tunnel 57 , the group built the longest escape tunnel. Suermann served the group primarily as a recruiter and financier for top politicians, prominent lawyers and industrialists. His motive for the activity was love for a woman from East Berlin.

Suermann is married and has two daughters. Since 1960 he has been a member of the Catholic student union AV Palatia Göttingen .
