Friedrich August Schäfer (born February 13, 1810 in Offenbach am Main ; † October 18, 1880 ibid) was honorary mayor of Offenbach am Main from April 7, 1849 to January 3, 1859 . The "Schäferstrasse" in Offenbach is named after him.

Life

Schäfer was the son of foreman Johann Jakob Schäfer and his wife Adelheid Philippine nee Hunckel (also: Hinckel). Friedrich August Schäfer, who was a Protestant denomination, married Charlotte née Petri. He lived as a manufacturer in Offenbach.

politics

The Offenbach mayors and mayors held their office from 1726 to 1858 on the upper floor of a small house on the market square, which was popularly known as the “flour scales”. After the premises there had become too small, Mayor Friedrich August Schäfer arranged for the acquisition of a formerly princely town house on Frankfurter Strasse shortly before the end of his term of office. The city administration of Offenbach used the building as a town hall until 1921. The house was destroyed by an air raid in 1943. In 1851, under the direction of Mayor Friedrich August Schäfer, the construction of a modern water supply was tackled. In 1859 Offenbach was one of the first medium-sized cities in Germany to have a central spring water supply that met hygienic requirements.

From 1862 to 1866 he was a member of the Second Chamber of the Estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse . He was elected for the constituency Starkenburg 3 / Langen . He belonged to the German Progressive Party .
