Walter Buckpesch (* 22. May 1924 in Offenbach am Main , † 25. January 2018 ) was a German politician of the SPD . He was Lord Mayor of Offenbach am Main from 1974 to 1980 and a member of the German Bundestag from 1983 to 1987 .

Live and act

Buckpesch grew up in Offenbach. During the Second World War he deserted from the Wehrmacht a few days before the end of the war . After the end of the war, he first trained as a machinist and then became a trade teacher. In 1956 he became a member of the Offenbach city ​​council and in 1961 city council. In this role he was responsible for the construction of the sports center on the Rosenhöhe . Between 1974 and 1980 he was mayor of the city. In 1983 he moved to the German Bundestag in Bonn as a member of the 10th electoral term . In 1987 he retired from politics.

Buckpesch's father Willi was after the liberation from fascism, together with Eugen Eberle (Frankfurt), the first state chairman of NaturFreunde in Hesse . Son Walter also joined NaturFreunde in 1946 after his return from captivity in Offenbach. Here he met his future wife Lilo; The couple married in 1950. Beyond Offenbach, Buckpesch was involved in the state youth management of the Hessian nature lovers and later also served as the deputy federal youth leader of the nature lovers. In 1959, under his leadership, a large delegation of nature lovers traveled to Auschwitz for the first time .

From 1967 to 1975 Walter Buckpesch was federal chairman of NaturFreunde Germany and from 1981 to 1990 vice-president of Naturfreunde Internationale.

Buckpesch was a longstanding board member of the EOSC Offenbach swimming club , co-founder of the Offenbach Sports Foundation and the Offenbach Association against Aircraft Noise, and treasurer of the Offenbach University of Design .

Buckpesch died on January 25, 2018.
