Samuel Scheffler
Samuel Scheffler (born October 20, 1951 ) is an American philosopher and professor of philosophy and law at New York University .
Scheffler studied at Harvard (graduation as BA, 1973) and Princeton (graduation with Ph.D., 1977), where he was supervised by Thomas Nagel , among others . His main research interests are ethics and political philosophy . He was best known for his rejection of maximizing action- consequentialism , according to which we must always perform the best of all possible actions. From 1977 to 2008 he worked at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of California, Berkeley , most recently as Professor of Philosophy and Law. Then he was appointed to New York University, also as professor of philosophy and law. He has been a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 2004 .
