Samuel Traugott Neumann

Samuel Traugott Neumann (born December 11, 1759 in Görlitz; † July 13, 1831 there ) was a legal scholar and mayor of the city of Görlitz in Upper Lusatia .

Life

Neumann was born in Görlitz in 1759 and attended the city high school. From 1777 he devoted himself to studying law, science and history at the University of Leipzig . After graduating, he returned to his hometown in 1782 and began working as a lawyer there the following year . In 1789, the city hired him as the city tax collector. In the following years he became senator (1790), city governor (1796), Scabinus (jury) (1797), city judge (1803) and finally mayor in 1806. In 1818 he was appointed police director and inspector of the grammar school.

Neumann worked for many years as a committee director and treasurer of the Upper Lusatian Society of Sciences and published numerous works here. His knowledge of the history of the country, heraldry and coinage were in demand. He also had private collections for his scientific work. Large parts of his collections were later transferred to the Upper Lusatian Society of Sciences and the Milich Library .

In 1784 he married Johanne Charlotte Juliane von Geißler. The marriage remained childless. Neumann died of a stroke at the age of 72 .
