from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Samuel ben Kalonymus he-Chassid (“the pious”, also: the saint, the prophet) (* after 1096 in Speyer ) was an important exegete of the Torah and Midrash . He is a bridge figure for the tradition of oral ethical and theological tradition of kalonymos family to Chaside Ashkenaz of 12.-13. Century.

Life

The biographical record of Samuel ben Kalonymus is sparse. Stories from the 15th to 16th centuries Century report on magical abilities with which he is said to have protected Jews from oppressors.

Work and continuation

With the exception of his contributions to the Sefer Ḥasidim (in particular the first part is ascribed to him), only a few quotations have been made of his work. His son Juda ben Samuel continued his work, especially his work on the Sefer Ḥasidim. His son Abraham ben Samuel is considered to be an important authority in the field of halacha .
