Grand Cross of the San Carlos Order

The San Carlos Order ( Orden Imperial de San Carlos ) was founded on April 10, 1865 by the Emperor Maximilian of Mexico as an order of women .

It was named in honor of the patron saint San Carlos and bestowed for mercy and renunciation. Award days were November 4th, the day of the patron saint, San Carlos, and July 7th; Birthday of the Empress Charlotte .

Order class

There were two classes for this order

  • Grand Cross (was limited to 24 members for the Empire)
  • Small cross

Order decoration

The sign of the order is a Latin cross , the cross arms of which end in a lily shape. A second, green enameled cross is placed on the cross. This bears the silver inscription Humilitas (motto of Saint Borromeo) and on the reverse San Carlos .

Ribbon

The grand cross was worn on a crimson sash over the right shoulder to the left and the small cross on the bow on the left chest. The ribbon color corresponded to that of the Grand Cross.
