Johann Georg von Bemmel

Johann Georg von Bemmel (born November 30, 1669 in Nuremberg ; † July 29, 1723 ibid) was a German genre , landscape and battle painter . He was the son of the Utrecht landscape painter Willem van Bemmel and brother of the painter Peter von Bemmel (1689–1753).

Life

He received his training from his father and from the battle painter Johann Philipp Lem (b) ke. When he moved to Sweden in 1674 , he studied his drawings. From around 1685 he worked in his father's workshop, for whom he made the figural staffages. These were initially copies made by Lemke, especially military and oriental equestrian figures. According to the "Biography of all Bemmel" (1799), Johann Georg remained too sickly to complete his training with a trip to Italy . He suffered from rheumatism and gout at an early age .

Johann Georg is still difficult to grasp as an independent painter, as he very rarely signed. Some figure drawings bear his signature, the paintings are only occasionally labeled "Bemel" on the reverse. The signed pictures include a landscape with nymphs in Koblenz, where the figures there correspond to the style of the history painter Johann Murrer and the stormy landscape is close to the oeuvre of his brother Peter. According to the older literature, Johann Georg von Bemmel continued his father's manner with the landscapes. Therefore his works can hide under the many attributions to Willem van Bemmel, which however do not reach his level. The figures here are indications of an assignment to Johann Georg. After his father's death (1708), he took over his workshop and lived in the Nuremberg artists' quarter on Paniersplatz. He died on July 29, 1723 in Nuremberg.
