San Carlos del Zulia is a city and the administrative center of the Colón district in the Venezuelan state of Zulia . The city is located on the banks of the Escalante River and near south of Lake Maracaibo . The average annual temperature is 28 ° C.

San Carlos del Zulia was founded on March 14, 1778 by Captain Nicolás José Antúnez Pacheco y de la Cruz, head of the city of Maracaibo , together with Lieutenant Ramón Hernández de la Calle. The Spanish administration wanted to exercise control over the Motilon Indians of the region.

The first settlers arrived on March 23, 1778. Rafael Echeverría became the first mayor.

At the time of the 2011 census, the city had about 57,000 residents. There is an airport and a thermal power station .

The city is connected by a national road with the city of Encontrados (44 km) and El Vigía (59 km). There are various other paths and roads to the corn and banana fields and to the cattle breeding areas. San Carlos is connected by two bridges to the neighboring town of Santa Barbara on the right of the Rio Escalante.
