The San Francisco Pride (actually: San Francisco Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Pride Celebration ) is a parade with festival character that every year in June in San Francisco takes place. Similar events in German-speaking countries are Christopher Street Day or the Rainbow Parade . San Francisco Pride is primarily an event for lesbians , gays , bisexuals, or transgender people . It is one of the best-known and best-attended parades of its kind worldwide and at the same time the largest parade in Northern California and the second largest parade in California after the Rose Parade .

history

The first event that resembled the modern day San Francisco Pride celebration took place in 1970. The parade has been held every year since 1972. The name of the festival has changed over time. The organizers put each parade under a specific motto, for which a logo was then designed and advertised. The rainbow flag , which is now a symbol of the gay and lesbian movement, was originally designed by Gilbert Baker for the San Francisco Pride Parade in 1978 (it originally had eight stripes and was only later reduced to the six stripes common today. An eight-stripe The rainbow flag flies over the Harvey Milk Plaza in the Castro district .).

parade

The San Francisco Pride Parade is the world's most famous parade hosted by the LGBT movement. The route is usually along Market Street to Beale Street , and from there to 8th Street. The parade takes place on a Sunday morning before the festival from 10:30 am, although preparations start hours earlier. It usually lasts until 4 p.m. The parade is made up of hundreds of train sections, which are provided by the various groups and organizations. It has been led by Dykes on Bikes , founded in San Francisco since 1976 and since then participating in parades around the world .

festival

Over time, a two-day festival (Saturday and Sunday) has developed around the parade. This festival features booths, booths, and dance areas located at the Civic Center near San Francisco City Hall . On Sunday there is the so-called “Leather Alley” with stands and demonstrations from the fetish and BDSM scene.

The festival traditionally takes place on the last weekend of June, which is intended to commemorate the Stonewall riots. But there have also been suggestions to let the festival take place on a different day, e.g. B. in 2004 on July 4th.

Independently of the San Francisco Pride, the so-called Pink Saturday takes place ( Castro Street , San Francisco).

administration

The festival is run by the San Francisco Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Pride Celebration Committee , a non-profit organization. By their own admission, their goal is "to educate the world, to remember our heritage, to celebrate our culture and to set our people free". The event is funded by donations, advertising revenue and San Francisco city funding. The festival is only made possible through volunteer work.
