San Giorgio dei Genovesi (Palermo)
San Giorgio dei Genovesi is a Renaissance church in Palermo .
The church was built between 1575 and 1596 in the Renaissance style by the Piedmontese architect Giorgio di Faccio in the Loggia district of Palermo near the newly created harbor pier. The building of the church was commissioned by the bankers and merchants from Genoa , who, after the political and economic decline of Pisa, had taken on a leading role in trading and banking in the Kingdom of Naples and Sicily . The role of San Giorgio as the house church of the merchant Genoese underlines its dedication to the belligerent Saint George, who was also the namesake of one of the most important banks in Europe ( Banco di San Giorgio ). The simple facade , only structured by two pilaster strips and projecting beams, is exemplary for several Renaissance churches in Sicily.
The three-aisled interior is the burial place of numerous Genoese, whose grave slabs from the 16th to 18th centuries adorn the floor and the church walls. The most prominent figure among them is the famous painter Sofonisba Anguissola , who married the rich Sicilian nobleman Don Fabrizio di Moncada.
