San Jacopo sopr'Arno
San Jacopo sopr'Arno is a church in Florence . The church is one of the oldest in Florence, is located directly on the Arno River and is now used as a place of worship by the Greek Orthodox Church .
Building history and art
The origins of the church go back to before the 11th century, excavations have shown. The vestibule of San Jacopo sopr'Arno shows itself in the Romanesque style, as the materiality and shape of the columns and arches as well as the decorative elements illustrate.
In 1660 the church received its bell tower , designed by Gherardo Silvani. Around 1709 the church was rebuilt in the baroque style. The altarpieces go back to this time, as do frescoes by the artists Niccolò Lapi, Pier Dandini and Matteo Bonecchi in the interior.
Trivia
Since the church is located directly on the river, when the water level is high, the Arno washes around the protruding wall behind which the apse is located. For this reason, in Florentine vernacular it is said that St. James bathes his backside in the Arno.
