San Lorenzo Martire

San Lorenzo Martire ( German  St. Laurentius Martyr ), also known as the Basilica San Lorenzo Diacono Martire , is the parish church of Verolanuova in Lombardy . The 17th century church of the diocese of Brescia was raised to the rank of minor basilica in 1971 .

history

The church was built in the highest part of Verolanuova in the 16th century on the spot where there was a small oratory of flagellants and another small sacred building named after Santa Maria del Suffragio.

Part of the current building preserves fragments of the original church. In the first chapel on the right, the frescoes on the wall bear the year 1522 in Roman numerals and depict an altarpiece with St. Catherine, flanked by St. Lucia and St. Apollonia.

In 1534 Pope Paul III raised the church to the collegiate church .

Giambattista Tiepolo , la Fall des Mannas .

The laying of the foundation stone for the new building took place in 1633 in the presence of religious and civil figures, among them the Counts Gambara. The construction was partly the fulfillment of a vow on the occasion of the plague epidemic and continued to take place on the urgent advice of Cardinal Karl Borromeo during a pastoral visit in 1580. Already on this occasion the existing building was judged to be no longer appropriate.

The solemn consecration took place in 1647 by the Bishop of Treviso Marco Morosini, to commemorate this event a plaque was built in the sacristy. In 1683 the altar area was delimited by precious polychrome marble balustrades.

In 1832 the new high altar in marble with green shades was installed in the choir. In the following century the interior was enriched with very elaborate decorations, which required the commitment of many artists, such as the Cominelli brothers from Manerbio, Roberto Galperti and Benedetto Lò from Verona and Gaetano Cresseri from Brescia.

The bell tower was built in 1909. In 1971 Pope Paul VI raised the church to the rank of minor basilica.

Building

The facade is unfinished and has a classicist appearance with a large architrave portal and a large triangular gable with small side bell towers. The interior consists of a single nave with a transept on the plan of a Latin cross . A dome with an octagonal drum and lantern rises above the crossing , the choir closes with a round apse .

Furnishing

The interior is decorated with many altars and chapels and works of art equipped . Above the main portal is the crucifixion by Ludovico Gallina, on the first altar on the right the Guardian Angel by Francesco Maffei , on the second Saint Francis Xavier by Pietro Ricchi, on the third the Fall of the Ancestors , also by Ricchi. In the right transept a Madonna and Saints by Giovan Battista Trotti and on the sides the admission and birth of St. Laurentius by Andrea Celesti . In the left transept the Last Supper by Maffei and, on the sides, the Fall of Manna and Sacrifice of Melchizedek by Giambattista Tiepolo . Tiepolo probably carried out this work on site between 1735 and 1740. In the other three altars on the left side of the nave Madonna and Saints by Pietro Liberi , a Pietà by Andrea Mainardi and Saints by Giulio Girelli. Behind the high altar, the martyrdom of St. Lawrence of Celesti, who also painted part of the choir.
