Francesco Maffei
Francesco Maffei (* around 1605 in Vicenza ; † June 2, 1660 in Padua ) was an Italian baroque painter.
He was raised in the Mannerist style in the workshop of Alessandro Maganza in Vicenza and was also influenced by Jacopo Tintoretto , Jacopo Bassano and Paolo Veronese . Maffei moved to Venice before 1638 . He achieved his breakthrough in Venice by completing the ceiling frescoes in the Chiesa degli Incurabili (between frescoes by Bernardo Strozzi and Padovanino ). In the 1640s he developed his own style with sometimes bizarre features (Vertova describes him as the most imaginative representative of the Baroque style in Venice). His pictures are often richly populated with figures and full of action, show a dissolution of contours and twisted figures in unusual perspectives.
In addition to religious subjects, he painted mythological motifs and portraits and copied classical works, for example by Titian and Tintoretto, in a free style. His works include pictures in the Rotonda of Rovigo (1644 to 1655) and in the Palazzo del Podesta in Vicenza.
Besides Venice and Vicenza, he also painted in other places in northern Italy such as Rovigo, Brescia and Padua , where he moved three years before his death.
