San Pedro is a small town in the south of Ambergris Caye Island in Belize, Central America . Almost all of the island's residents live in this city.

The city has around 12,900 inhabitants (estimate as of mid-2009) and administratively belongs to the Belize District . San Pedro was founded in 1848 by mestizo refugees from the Caste War in Yucatán . In the following years, a dye industry based on the cultivation of logwood developed . The place experienced a further boom through the chicle production .

Today San Pedro lives almost exclusively from tourism and especially from divers who start from here on the nearby Belize Barrier Reef .

In San Pedro itself there are only a few cars that are otherwise subject to strict permits. Most of the traffic is carried out with electric and gasoline-powered golf karts. San Pedro has a paved road network.

San Pedro is the place where Madonna sings about longing in her song: La Isla Bonita from 1986
