San Salvatore al Monte

The Church of San Salvatore al Monte has been in the San Niccolò district of Florence since the 15th century . Like the neighboring church of San Miniato al Monte , it towers high above the city, still above Piazzale Michelangelo . It is a Franciscan church with an attached monastery complex . Sometimes there are also the names San Francesco al Monte alle Croci or San Francesana di San Salvatore al Monte alle Croci.

Lorenzo il Magnifico had been involved in the planning of the church since 1474 , but the building was in the care of the Calimala guild , which in 1487 entrusted the construction management to the builder Simone del Pollaiuolo , known as Cronaca, and whose coat of arms can be seen above the entrance portal . Cronaca was supported in the design of the church by Giuliano da Sangallo . Although the choir collapsed in 1500 - probably due to static planning errors - due to the sloping terrain, the church was inaugurated 4 years later, i.e. in 1504.

The church building is a single-nave hall church with an open wooden roof and a flat choir chapel. Contrary to the usual church type of mendicant orders , this church has numerous side chapels. Especially in the design of the windows, Cronaca's concern with the requirements of ancient architecture is clearly recognizable.

It is said that Michelangelo liked to go to church and called it his bella villanella , that is, his beautiful country girl .
