The San Ta Pha Daeng ( Thai ศาล ตา ผา แดง ) is a Hindu shrine ( Prang ) in the district ( Amphoe ) Mueang Sukhothai Province Sukhothai , Northern Thailand .

location

The San Ta Pha Daeng is part of the Sukhothai Historical Park . It stands north of Wat Mahathat near the northern city gate ( ปร ตู ศาลหลวง - San Luang Gate).

Building history

The San Ta Pha Daeng is a cube-shaped structure made of laterite that dates back to the 12th century. A narrow staircase, which is also made of laterite, leads up to the approximately three meter high base of the building. The upper part of the prang has been destroyed.

Prince Naris , who gave the building the name Sala Phra Pradaeng, traced the name back to the Cambodian title Kamaten .

Overall, the building is reminiscent of similar facilities in Angkor from the time of King Suryavarman II (r. 1113–1150).

Attractions

During restoration work in 1959, five male and female Brahmanistic figures without heads made of sandstone were found in the shrine . They date from the first half of the 12th century and are in the Khmer style . Clothes and jewelry are reminiscent of similar figures in the reliefs of Angkor Wat . Today the figures are in the Ramkhamhaeng National Museum .
