San Thang

San H. Thang AC (born August 28, 1954 in Saigon ) is an Australian chemist from Vietnam ( macromolecular chemistry ).

Thang studied chemistry at the University of Saigon (bachelor's degree in 1976), was a chemist in a sewing machine factory in Vietnam until 1979 and then came to Australia as a refugee. He continued his studies at Griffith University in Brisbane with a bachelor's degree in 1983 and a PhD in polymer chemistry in 1987. From 1986 he was with CSIRO . There he stayed with ICI Australia from 1987 to 1990, except for a time as an industrial chemist. He became Chief Research Scientist of CSIRO. In 2015 he became a professor at Monash University , where he had been an adjunct professor since 2010. He was also an adjunct professor in Bangkok.

Together with Ezio Rizzardo and Graeme Moad, he is the developer of RAFT polymerisation . Her 1998 publication is among the most highly cited works in chemistry, and Thang is among the Thomson Reuters Citation Laureates .
