Sancho III. (Castile)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sancho III. el Deseado , nicknamed "the Desired" (* 1134 ; † August 31, 1158 in Toledo ) was King of Castile from 1157 to 1158 . He was the eldest son of King Alfonso VII of Castile-León and his wife Berenguela of Barcelona , daughter of Raimund Berengar III.

On February 4, 1151, the 17-year-old heir to the throne married Princess Blanka of Navarre (* after 1133; † August 12, 1156) a daughter of King García IV and Marguerite de l'Aigle. His brother Ferdinand II, who was four years his junior , had been King of Galicia since 1154, but was also awarded the Kingdom of León and Asturias after his father's death . After Ferdinand's accession to the throne in León , there were disputes with the local nobility, in which Sancho III. interfered.

Sancho III. was crowned in Toledo on August 21, 1157 after the death of his father and only reigned for a full year. The disputes with his brother were settled by the Treaty of Sahagún , in which Ferdinand and Sancho delimited their zones of influence and made arrangements for mutual succession, but on August 31, 1158, Sancho died surprisingly after only a year in government. He was buried in the Cathedral of Santa María . He left two sons, ( Alfonso VIII and García).
