The Sandakan War Memorial (dtsch. World War II memorial Sandakan ) is a monument in the Malaysian city of Sandakan in the state of Sabah , which commemorates the victims of the Second World War. The memorial is part of the Sandakan Heritage Trail , a "memorial trail " that connects the historical sights of Sandakan.

Description of the monument

The monument exists in two versions. The original, a marble stele, is placed in front of the Sandakan High Court . It is inscribed in Chinese (front) and English (back). The English inscription reads:

This Site
Is Set Apart
For
A
Memorial
In Honor Of
Those Citizens
Of This Town
Who
By Reason Of Their
Loyalty
Lost Their Lives
During The
Japanese Occupation
19th Jan. 1942 - 17th Oct. 1945
Unveiled on 17th Sept. 1946
By
His Excellency
The Rt. Hon. Malcolm MacDonald
PC
Governor-General Of Malaya
And
British Borneo

The newer version is only a few dozen meters away on MPS Square. The metal plate of this replica bears an identical inscription.

Installation site

The fact that two versions of the monument exist is due to the upgrading of MPS Square, i.e. the area in front of the District Office , to a representative place of remembrance.

As part of the transformation of the former hockey field into "MPS Square", the city's most important monuments were merged. While the two monuments William Pryer Memorial and Chartered Company Memorial stand for the pioneering days of the city, the Sandakan War Memorial and the Sandakan Liberation Monument commemorate the victims and sufferings of the Japanese occupation.
