Sand dredger (boat type)

Sand dredger is a type of boat that was common among oyster fishermen in the New York area in the early 19th century . The boats were rigging the sloop type. In order to be able to land the oyster catches quickly, this type of boat was heavily rigged. To compensate for the excessive rigging, sandbags were used as trim weights - hence the name sand dredger . In the late 19th century developed out of the boat races and sailing of fishing with these boats still in boating are known.

The sand dredger Annie , built in 1880, is now in the museum of Mystic Seaport .
