Sander Terphuis

Sander Terphuis (* 1972 in Tehran as Ahmad Queleich Khany (حمد قلیچ خانی)) is a Dutch - Iranian refugee, lawyer, former professional wrestler and a prominent member of the Partij van de Arbeid . Terphuis is visually impaired, he sees 6% in one eye and only 1% in the other.

Life

Terphuis was delegated by Iran in 1990 to the World Disabled Games in Assen . He asked for asylum there and was naturalized in 1995 . As a result, he had to change his Iranian name to a Dutch one. He decided on Terphuis because it didn't exist yet but sounds Dutch (Frisian). Terphuis studied law at the University of Utrecht and was a judge in training. He worked as a specialist in immigration policy for the Ministry of Justice and as legal advisor to the State Constitutional Commission in the Ministry of Home Affairs and Kingdom Relations.

He was federal chairman of the Dutch Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (NVBS) and Vice-President of Viziris, an organization that represents the needs of the blind and visually impaired. For the parliamentary elections in the Netherlands in 2010 he was a candidate for the Dutch Labor Party. He played an important role in the debate about the criminalization of illegal refugees in 2013. In 2014 he was on the list of candidates for the 2014 European elections. Since 2011 he has been writing for Joop.nl.
