The Hotel Sands was an American hotel in Las Vegas . It opened on December 15, 1952 as the seventh hotel on the Las Vegas Strip . Like the neighboring Desert Inn , it belonged to industrialist Howard Hughes in the 1960s . The Sands was closed on June 30, 1996 and blown up on November 26 of the same year. The Venetian Resort Hotel was built on the site .

Some of the greats from the music world who have performed here include Dean Martin , Sammy Davis, Jr. and Frank Sinatra , who gave his show Sinatra at the Sands there. The three were staying at the hotel as were the other members of the Rat Pack when the 1960s version of Ocean's Eleven was filmed.
