The Sandstraße is a street in Bamberg , directly below the Domberg and the Michelsberg . The surrounding sandy area is the core of Bamberg's old town. It is the heart of the Sandkerwa , the famous Bamberg Old Town Festival at the end of August.

course

The Sandstraße begins as Obere Sandstraße on Katzenberg, a steep place directly below the Domplatz in a direct extension of Dominikanerstraße, which begins at the Untere Brücke. About 120 meters after the Katzenberg, Obere Sandstrasse bends sharply to the right (east) and immediately opens again to the left (north) into Elisabethenplatz in front of the prison with the Elisabethenkirche. Then it continues as Untere Sandstraße to the driveway of the Markusbrücke over the Regnitz and continues for about half a kilometer below the Michelsberg until it merges into the Schweinfurter Straße at the junction of Leinritt and Maienbrunnen.

When people talk about Sandstraße in Bamberg, they usually mean the street from Dominikanerstraße to Markusbrücke.

Sand area, sand

The lanes and streets around the sand road are called sand areas. The area extends at least from Dominikanerstraße to Markusbrücke and includes the development between (smaller) Regnitz and the hills rising behind it (Kaul-, Dom- and Michelsberg).

  • On the Leinritt (Regnitzufer)
  • Elisabethenplatz (Upper / Lower / Elisabethenstrasse)
  • Elisabethenstraße (Leintritt / Elisabethenplatz / Cathedral)
  • Katzenberg
  • Kasernenstrasse (Katzenberg / Leintritt)
  • Upper sand road
  • Ottoplatz (between Dom- and Michelsberg)
  • Sandbad (Kasernenstrasse / Leinritt / Elisabethenplatz)
  • Schrottenberggasse (Untere / Ottoplatz)
  • Lower sand road (southern part)

The transitions to Schranne, Domberg and Michelsberg are fluid, but the boundaries of the sand are definitely reached south of the Schranne and north at the beginning of the Gaustadt district.

Civic association

In the sandy area there is the Citizens' Association IV. District, whose name still refers to the division of the city at the time it was founded in 1891. He is the organizer of the Sandkerwa and also holds the naming rights.

Streetscape and development

The historical development of the sand roads is under monument protection throughout and is part of the world cultural heritage and city monument of Bamberg. In the area from Katzenberg to Markusbrücke, the street scene is characterized by old houses and palaces of various architectural styles and eras with small shops and numerous Franconian restaurants and pubs.

Rehabilitation of the Upper Sand Road

In recent years, Obere Sandstraße was designed as a one-way street with the direction of Elisabethenplatz and Katzenberg / Dominikanerstraße. The road surface was made of asphalt, the narrow sidewalks with high kerbstones were made of the stones used in Bamberg. After 6 p.m. the driveway was closed and taxis were allowed to enter.

Due to the structural narrowness, the winding streets, but also the disregard of the regulations by visitors, citizens and stray people, the burden for residents, passers-by and motorists was high, apart from the use of the street that did not correspond to the world cultural heritage status.

In 2007 the Obere Sandstrasse was paved with a new pavement. During the renovation phase and afterwards, the sand road was closed to through traffic. This led to numerous conflicts, speculations and protests in Bamberg, which was open to discussion. Mainly the district of Gaustadt, north of Sandstrasse, feels excluded from the already complicated traffic routing. The current blockage (previously in the form of fixed bollards in front of the Schlenkerla) will only be lifted in the morning for suppliers. There are exceptions for rescue vehicles, police, etc. as well as for vehicles over seven meters in length that cannot turn in the sandy area.

After the completion of the construction phase, business people and innkeepers reported increased public traffic in the lighter and friendlier street. There are now free bar areas with outside seating to further enhance the street. Since 2006, on the first weekend in Advent, the IG interesSAND ... organized the Advent market in the sand around the St. Elisabeth church.
