The Sandkerwa (high language Sandkirchweih ) is a traditional Bamberg fair that takes place every year in August in the historic old town - more precisely in the sand , i.e. around the Sandstrasse . Every year it attracts around 300,000 visitors over five days (Thursday to Monday), making it the largest folk festival in Bamberg and one of the largest folk festivals in Bavaria. For the 60th anniversary in 2010, the Sandkerwa lasted seven days (from August 18th to August 24th).

history

The Sandkerwa was originally the parish fair of the St. Elisabeth Church in the Sand (i.e. on Sandstrasse), which was formerly the chapel of the first Bamberg Citizens' Hospital (today a correctional facility ). The income from the sale of festival badges and other souvenirs will go to the IV. The citizens' association is the initiator and organizer of the event. The Sandkerwa logo is a protected word and image trademark .

The Sandkerwa 2017 was canceled on May 3, 2017 by the citizens' association with reference to "the current security situation" and the incalculable "financial risks". The city of Bamberg initially tried unsuccessfully to find an alternative implementation concept. For 2018, the city council created a rescue concept for the Sandkerwa, which provides for financial participation by the city. However, the citizens' association was not able to implement it in 2017.

The Bamberg city council and CSU parliamentary group chairman Helmut Müller got into serious trouble because of a statement in relation to these efforts. Quote: “The Sandkerwa is an amusement for the precariat . This is where the lower classes come together to get drunk. ”Even their own faction was outraged and distanced itself from Müller's views. This let the group chairmanship rest temporarily.

Due to the ban on major events as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic , Sandkerwa 2020 also had to be canceled. Previously, it had been considered to move the event to September, but this was rejected by the organizers as too uncertain.

Attractions

The highlight of the Sandkerwa is the historical jousting of the Bamberg boatmen and fishermen's guild against the backdrop of Little Venice , the former fishing district on the Regnitz . The prick has served the prince-bishop and the population since the 15th century. The conclusion is on Monday at 22 o'clock a large fireworks display . The main attraction of the festival, however, are the many beer stalls serving beer from Bamberg and the surrounding area.

criticism

In recent years, physical injuries and property damage in connection with the Sandkerwa have increased significantly. According to the organizers and the Bamberg police, excessive alcohol consumption plays a significant role here. In response to uncontrolled urination outdoors, public toilets could be visited ten times for four euros by 2016 with the so-called Piss-nix-in-the-City card . In 2018 this card was no longer available. 50 cents have to be paid for going to public toilets.

In 2012 there were mobile urinals for the first time , which were widely used. According to residents and business people, urination in the wild has hardly been restricted so far. The security problem at the Sandkerwa is similar to that at other major events.
