history

The Bamberg Marionette Theater was founded by Klaus Loose in 1987 and opened with the popular play "Dr. Faustus". Loose had previously played on the 1821 stage in Oldenburg for 20 years .

In 1998 Loose bequeathed his theater to the city of Bamberg, which has owned it ever since. The Bamberg Marionette Theater is operated by the association "Freunde des Bamberger Marionettentheater eV", which also plays the theater on behalf of the City of Bamberg. The theater director is Maria Sebald.

The Bamberg Marionette Theater is considered to be the smallest theater in Bavaria .

Venue

The venue is the Staubsche Haus ( Untere Sandstrasse 30), probably built by Johann Lorenz Fink in 1796. The equipment of the auditorium takes this into account.

Repertoire and staging

The repertoire mainly includes plays and operas from the Romantic era . Klaus Loose was very distant from the directorial theater , which in his opinion wanted to underline the topicality of classical plays by transferring them to the modern age or by alienating them, and tried to staging true to the original.

In some cases, original props from the 19th century are still used.
