Sandy (penguin)

Sandy is the name of a penguin in the Allwetterzoo Münster . Through various television productions and the use of the penguin in public relations, it is one of the most famous zoo animals in Germany.

Sandy hatched in the Nuremberg Zoo in 1996 and later came to the Münster Allwetterzoo. She was raised by her parents and only showed a special interest in people when she was two years old. The bird , which has meanwhile been influenced by humans , was the only penguin to be given an individual name by carer Peter Vollbracht . The female penguin is imprinted on its keeper and has apparently chosen him as a partner. Sandy is generally not afraid of people and not only lets them touch her, but also shows interest in strangers. Sandy later accepted the male penguin Tom as a partner. Together with him, she raised her first chick in 2008. After Tom died in 2009, Sandy found a new penguin man in Hermann.

Because of its openness, the penguin is used in the zoo's public relations work and is often a guest in schools or old people's homes. In addition to the zoo documentary soap Pinguin, Löwe & Co. , in the title of which Sandy appears first indirectly, the penguin and his keeper were guests in various programs such as Johannes B. Kerner , Harald Schmidt or TV total . The bird was also present at a service by Jürgen Fliege in the Gnadenkirche in Münster. In 2004, Sandy was voted the most popular animal in the Münster Zoo by listeners to the radio station WDR 2 . In the TV film Zoogeflüster - Don't get into my enclosure! Sandy "embodied" the penguin "Schulze". In the episode of the Münster crime scene " Schlangengrube" with the investigator duo Thiel and Boerne , Sandy has a "supporting role".
