The Sandyknowes Roundabout is a traffic roundabout on the north-western edge of the conurbation around the Northern Irish capital Belfast .

location

The roundabout is between the villages of Carnmoney , Glengormley and Mallusk on the western edge of the closed development of the former borough of Newtownabbey and thus in the district of Antrim and Newtownabbey .

meaning

The A8 (M) motorway , the A6 trunk road , the B 90 regional road and a local road to Mallusk meet at the Sandyknowes Roundabout . A bridge will lead the M2 motorway over the roundabout. Ramps lead to and from the roundabout in both directions, making it part of motorway exit number 4. With a total of seven entrances and seven exits, it is one of the most heavily used traffic hubs in the country. A relief through the construction of direct connections between the A8 (M) and the M2 to and from Belfast has been in the preparatory planning stage since August 2015.

history

The Sandyknowes Roundabout was built at the same time as the construction of the A8 (M) and the first section of the M2, which ran east towards Belfast, and was commissioned like this in 1966. It got its name from a small settlement immediately to the northwest that had to give way to the construction of the structure.
