The Sanjiangyuan Conservation Area is a protected area in the south of the Chinese province of Qinghai . It is the second largest protected area on earth and covers 152,300 square kilometers of land. Only about 200,000 people live in this vast area, which is larger than England and Wales combined. Three huge rivers, the Yangtzekiang , the Yellow River and the Mekong , have their source in this region and are fed by the numerous wetlands. The reserve contains a total of 18 special protection zones ( Conservation Areas ), with three types being distinguished: (1) wetland protection zones, (2) game protection zones and (3) bush and forest protection zones.

The area is home to numerous wild animals typical of the Tibetan highlands. Including the Tibetan Gazelle . It is also one of the few protected areas where the white-lipped deer can be found. Other threatened species in the reserve are the wild yak and the Tibetan antelope .
