The Sankt Pauli Museum (original spelling) is a private museum in the Hamburg district of St. Pauli .

It receives, collects and supplements exhibits on the history of the district. The total stock consists of several million photos, memorabilia, official documents and other documents, which are made available to the public in the permanent exhibition as well as changing special exhibitions. The aim of the St. Pauli Museum eV support association is to present the " story from below " against forgetting the diverse life in this district and to work for a democratic, multicultural and environmentally friendly society.

history

The museum was founded in 1988 by the Hamburg author and journalist Günter Zint . The sponsoring association “Culture for Sankt Pauli e. V. “opened the first exhibition rooms in the house of Schmidt's Tivoli on Spielbudenplatz in 1991 for the 100th birthday of Hans Albers . In 1993 the museum moved to Spielbudenplatz across from the Panoptikum Hamburg , with which the Sankt Pauli Museum is closely connected.

Due to the redesign of the Spielbudenplatz, the museum had to move in 1996. After three provisional addresses, the museum finally found new rooms in 2010 right next to the Davidwache in Davidstraße 17. The conversion of the former McDonald’s building was carried out by the Round Table on St. Pauli (represented by Andreas Zimmermann), association members, Hayo Färber (Panoptikum) , Hartmut Roderfeld (St. Pauli Citizens' Association), residents and sponsors. The city of Hamburg also helped with a grant.

Since 2005 the museum has been run by the St. Pauli Museum e. V. operated. The museum has three honorary presidents: Ernst Bader , Willi Bartels and Günter Zint .

At the end of 2019 it became known that the museum would have to give up its premises on Davidstrasse after a drastic rent increase. The district assembly Hamburg-Mitte offered a sum of 20,000 euros at short notice to offset the additional costs. However, since the association had already terminated the lease as a precaution, new premises must now be found. In addition, the association has so far generated around € 67,000 in debt.
