Saint Ursula spring

The Sankt-Ursula-Quelle is a spring on the island Ivö in the Swedish lake Ivösjön .

location

The spring is located not far from the shore of the Kyrkeviken Bay , east of the village of Ivö , on the northeast side of the churchyard of Ivö Church .

history

The small spring is dedicated to St. Ursula and was considered holy. According to legend, the Archbishop of Lund Andreas Sunesen , who lived on Ivö in Ivöhus in the 1220s, sent a servant to the spring on Christmas Eve to fetch water. When the servant brought the water, the water is said to have turned into wine. The bishop sent the servant again, instructing him not to taste the contents. But the servant did not obey and the wine turned back to water. Even later, no more wine could be drawn from the spring.

Offerings were thrown into the spring well into the 18th century. Even today, visitors leave coins at the source. At first, however, the source was forgotten and overgrown. In 1948 the church elder Hilmer Nilsson restored the spring. Another restoration of the source surrounds took place in 1991.
