The church was built at the beginning of the 13th century in the Romanesque style , possibly on the initiative of the Archbishop of Lund Andreas Sunesen, who temporarily lived on Ivö . It is one of the oldest brick churches in Skåne . In the period up to the Reformation the church was consecrated to St. Ursula .

The reason why the church was not built on an elevated point in the village of Ivö, but rather to the east of it, is not known. It is believed that this was due to the Saint Ursula spring , which is considered sacred . Another view assumes that the aim was to be as close as possible to the lakeshore in order to give the bishop, who resides on the other lakeshore in Ivöhus , as well as other travelers easy access to the church.

The current church vault dates from the 15th century, it replaced a flat ceiling that had existed until then. The choir was created in the early 19th century. The church tower and vestibule were completed in 1820.

On an older wall of the choir is a fragment of a picture from the 15th century. It depicts the story of Saint Ursula and some of the 11,000 virgins. Murals were restored in 1939 and 1940.

A baptismal font, which dates from the time the church was built, should be mentioned in particular. The pulpit was created in 1920 by Nils Djurberg from Kiaby . In 1955 an organ was purchased , which was restored in 1965. In 1958 a new bell was purchased.

The church is surrounded by a cemetery. The Sankt-Ursula-Quelle is located directly northeast of the churchyard wall.
