Petrus and Paulus Church in Pfedelbach

history

The Catholic parish of Pfedelbach, like the monastery of the city of Öhringen, belonged to the diocese of Würzburg since the Middle Ages . The community that was newly established in 1732 was assigned to the Krautheim regional chapter . After Hohenlohe passed to Württemberg , the Würzburg's spiritual rights ended. Pfedelbach was assigned to the Neckarsulm chapter in 1808. From 1728 Count Ferdinand von Hohenlohe-Bartenstein settled Catholics in and around Pfedelbach. Service was celebrated in a hall of the Pfedelbach Castle . A short time later the court chapel was set up in the castle. Capuchins , who set up a hospice in Pfedelbach, looked after the community from 1732 . By order of the Württemberg government, the hospice was closed in 1810 and a secular priest was appointed pastor. On August 15, 1811, King Friedrich I of Württemberg elevated the Catholic community to a parish. After an extract from the Hohenloher Bote dated July 25, 1863, the Pfedelbach parish was assigned to a large number of parishes. The area extended to Weißbach, Wohlmuthausen, Zweiflingen, Kirchensall, Neuenstein, Langenbeutingen, Adolzfurt, Unterheimbach, Mainhardt, Geißelhardt and Untersteinbach. All Catholics within this area belonged to Pfedelbach.

The urgently needed church was built in Windischenbacher Straße from 1888 according to plans by the architect Ulrich Pohlhammer . The white sand-lime brick used comes from the Strohberg near Untersteinbach, the stone material on the north side from the Buchhorn quarries. The bell was cast by Petit & Gebr. Edelbrock in Gescher , it cost 4,000 marks. The total cost of the neo-Gothic building was 90,000 marks. On August 30, 1888, Auxiliary Bishop Dr. Wilhelm von Reiser visited the church with a lot of people. During the Second World War, the three choir windows were destroyed by artillery fire. Damage from the bombardment is still visible on the north side.

It was not until 1952 that Öhringen and Neuenstein became independent parishes. In 1956, Bretzfeld and, most recently, Mainhardt were released into self-employment in 1967. In the 200th year of existence, the parish has about 2000 believers.
