Sanlitun
Sanlitun ( Chinese 三里屯 , Pinyin sān lǐ tún ) is a road area of the city district Chaoyang in eastern China's capital Beijing . There was a bar and pub street in Sanlitun which, despite several threats of closure, was very popular with young people and foreign tourists. The former bar area around Nan Jie Street ("South Street") in Sanlitun was demolished in 2005 to make way for a new shopping mall, Sanlitun Village and other high-rise projects. Even so, the area remains a center of Beijing nightlife and entertainment.
Before the Olympic Games in Beijing , Sanlitun was renovated.
The Sanlitun area was notorious for drug trafficking. Cameras were later installed to prevent illegal drug trafficking and prostitution.

Before 1949 , the diplomatic quarter was in downtown Beijing. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the government wanted it outside the city center. The place Sanlitun was chosen. The name means that the place is 3 Li (san li, 三 里) away from the Dongzhimen gate - tun (屯) means hamlet , small village .
