Sandquhar Castle is a ruined castle in Dumfries and Galloway , Scotland . Standing on the southern edge of the village of Sanquhar , it is located on the Southern Upland Way (a Scottish long-distance hiking trail) and is passed by hundreds of visitors every year.
The fortified castle borders the Nith to the west and a small stream to the north.
history
Sanquhar Castle was built by the Crichton family in the 13th century . It has been visited by many eminent people over the years including Robert the Bruce , William Wallace , Edward I , Mary Queen of Scots , and James IV.
In the 17th century the castle was sold to Sir William Douglas, 1st Duke of Queensberry . He had already built Drumlanrig Castle with its unique pink sandstone ten miles south of Sanquhar near Thornhill . From then on, Sanquhar Castle fell into disrepair until it was acquired in 1895 by John Patrick Crichton-Stuart, 3rd Marquess of Bute . He raved about rebuilding and restoring the ancestral home, just like Cardiff Castle and Castell Coch before. His death in 1900 ended that dream; work on the castle was stopped. What remained was a partly restored ruin, partly in its original state, as it is today.
