Sant Joan Baptista (Palau-saverdera)
The Church of Sant Joan Baptista ( St. John the Baptist Church ) is a Romanesque church in the Catalan community of Palau-saverdera in the comarca of Alt Empordà in northeastern Spain . It serves the local Catholic parish as a parish church and belongs to the deanery ( arxiprestat ) Alt Empordà Interior in the diocese of Girona .
history
The church was built in the early 11th century and is first mentioned in a document from the monastery of Santa Maria de Roses in 1070.
architecture
The Església de Sant Joan consists of three naves with barrel vaults . The building is divided into four sections and has a central apse with two semicircular apses. The outer facade was designed in the Lombard style with arches and pillars - especially in the area of the central apse. The side portal of the church was restored in 1981 in the style of historicism . The building was built on the ruins of an ancient Roman villa; Some of the building materials from this previous building were used in the church, including ceramic tiles on the northern wall and in the window area of the apse.
Hermitage of San Onofre
On the territory of the parish there is a hermitage , which is first mentioned in 1448 and is dedicated to the Egyptian hermit Onofre (Onophrios).
