Sant Martí de la Cortinada
The Església Sant Martí de la Cortinada is a Romanesque church north of Ordino in the Principality of Andorra .
description
The original building was constructed in the 12th century and expanded in the 17th and 18th centuries. The high altar with a multicolored wooden altarpiece from the 17th century is dedicated to the patron saint of the church. The almost square nave with apse has four side chapels. The two-story bell tower is at the end of the original nave.
During the restoration of the apse in 1968, wall paintings by the master of La Cortinada were found dating from the late 12th century. The wall paintings show figures such as a kind of wolf with a forked tongue and a figure of Guillem Guifré (1041-1075) from the Bisbat d'Urgell , as well as a portrait of the church patron of the church Martin of Tours , one of the most famous saints of the Roman Catholic Church .
The church also contains other historical elements, such as a set of four 18th century Baroque altarpieces in the side chapels, 17th century wooden furniture and confessional, a carillon wheel, and a series of wrought iron railings that point to the tradition of iron in Andorra and were installed to protect the high altar and the side chapels.
The building is protected as Monument Nº 24 on the basis of the Law on the Cultural Heritage of Andorra (Llei del patrimoni cultural d'Andorra) of June 12, 2003.
Trivia
Around the church there are other buildings built in the typical Andorran architectural style, such as the Cal Pal mill , a sawmill with the Cal Pal mansion with a white half-timbered tower that is unique for Andorra .
