The Church of Santa Maria della Neve al Colosseo is a Catholic church in the Italian capital, Rome .

location

It is located in the Rione Monti , on the north side of Via del Colosseo in a corner position on Via del Cardello, which opens east of the church from the north . The well-known Colosseum is located about 250 meters southeast of the church .

Architecture and history

The origin of the church is unknown, but at least it existed as early as the 12th century. It served as a parish church and later belonged to the Cardinal of San Pietro in Vincoli . It was named Sant'Andrea de Tabernula and Sant'Andrea de Portugallo . In 1607 the church came to the Università dei Rigattieri , which it rebuilt in the late Baroque style. Carlo Fontana and Giuseppe Sardi are suspected to be some of the architects . After the French Revolution , the Brotherhood of Santa Maria della Neve took over the building and the name of the church was changed at the same time.

The south-facing facade is slightly arched. The corners are accented with pilasters . The facade is crowned by an openwork tympanum . There are three altars inside the church. They are decorated with paintings from the 17th century. From left to right there are Saints Francis and Saints Clare , the Assumption of Mary at the main altar and the baptism of Jesus .

Today the church in need of renovation is run as a daughter church of Santa Maria ai Monti and serves as a place of prayer for the community of Sant'Egidio .
