Sante Carollo (born February 8, 1924 in Montecchio Maggiore , † January 9, 2004 in Thiene ) was an Italian cyclist .

Athletic career

Sante Carollo, a bricklayer by trade, was only a professional for one season . In 1949 he was nominated at short notice for the Giro d'Italia instead of the sick cycling star Fiorenzo Magni . Already after the first stage he was one hour behind the first, which Luigi Malabrocca called to the scene, who had worn the prestigious black jersey ( Maglia Nera ) of the last in the overall standings in 1947 and 1948 . Malabrocca tried to lose as much time as possible by hiding in bars, barns or behind hedges. His bad luck was that when he arrived in Monza the jury had already gone home and rated him with the same time as the main peloton, so that Carollo could keep the black jersey. This “fight” for last place was enthusiastically followed by the radio listeners and even compared to the duels between Fausto Coppi and Gino Bartali .

After this season, Carollo ended his professional cycling career and worked as a bricklayer again.

In 2006, the one-person play “La Maglia Nera” by and with Matteo Caccia was premiered in Italy, which also addresses the rivalry between Carollo and Malabrocca.
