Santi Pagnini

Santi Pagnini (* 1470 in Lucca , † approx. 1536 in Lyon ) was an Italian Bible scholar during the Renaissance .

Life

Pagnini joined the Dominican Order in 1487 and gained such a reputation for his knowledge of the oriental languages that Pope Leo X invited him to teach in Rome. In about 1518, he completed a Latin translation of the Bible from Hebrew and Greek. It was published in Lyon in 1527 and later (1541) in Cologne . It was the first translation that divided the Bible into separate verses. Pagnini also compiled a Hebrew grammar and dictionary, which had numerous editions.
