Santiago Oñate Laborde

Santiago Oñate Laborde (* 1949 in Mexico City ) is a Mexican lawyer and politician of the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI).

Life

Santiago Oñate Laborde studied at the London School of Economics and Social Sciences and at the University of Wisconsin .

He held various party offices in the PRI and was a member of the Mexican government. In 1985 he was elected to the Mexican Chamber of Deputies (Camara de Diputados) and was a member of the legislative assembly of the Mexican capital region from 1998 onwards. In 1991 and 1992 he was ambassador to the Organization of American States , and in 1993 he headed the Office of the Environmental Prosecutor ( Procuraduría Federal de Protección al Medio Ambiente or PROFEPA ). In 1995 he was nominated as chairman of his party PRI. He headed the Presidential Office ( Oficina de la Presidencia ) of the Mexican President Carlos Salinas . President Ernesto Zedillo appointed him Minister of Labor and Social Affairs . He later became ambassador to Great Britain and the Netherlands .
