Shantiniketan ( Bengali : শান্তিনিকেতন , Śāntiniketan ; literally: " Home of Peace"; formerly also: Santiniketan ) is a place in the Birbhum district in the Indian state of West Bengal . It forms a district of the municipality of Bolpur .

Rabindranath Tagore gave the place its name and founded the Visva-Bharati University here in 1901 . Tagore's house is now a museum.

Shantiniketan lives from tourism and has numerous festivals. It is the birthplace of Nobel laureate Amartya Sen .
