Sara Gómez Yera (born November 8, 1943 in Havana , † June 2, 1974 in Havana) was a Cuban film director and screenwriter .

Life

Gómez studied piano for six years at the conservatory in Havana and initially worked as a journalist for the youth magazine Mella and the Sunday supplement of the Communist Party's daily newspaper Hoy . From 1961 she worked for the Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematográficos , the newly founded national film institute. She was assistant director to Roberto Fandiño ( Tiempo de pioneros , 1962), Tomás Gutiérrez Alea ( Cumbite , 1964), Jorge Fraga ( El robo , 1965) and Agnès Varda ( Salut les cubains , 1963). In 1962 she made her first short film with Plaza Vieja . Her first important work was to be the documentary De cierta manera in 1974 . She was unable to finish the film, and in the same year she died of an acute asthma attack. The film was therefore completed by Tomás Gutiérrez Alea.

Sara Gómez was one of the few (colored) women who made a feature film in Cuba in the 20th century: De cierta manera from 1974 is a critical and emancipatory work. The film mixes documentation and fiction and illuminates the social changes in society in post-revolutionary Cuba.
