The Saruwaged Mountains (also Saruwared , Sarawaket or Sarawaget ) is a mountain range on the Huon Peninsula in the Morobe Province in northeast Papua New Guinea . The mountain range is dominated by the Sarawaget massif , which is crowned by the two peaks of Mount Bangeta and Mount Sarawaged . Mount Sarawaged is located approximately at 6 ° 19 ' S , 147 ° 5' E and is given an altitude of 4121 m , which is confirmed by satellite-based radar altitude measurements ( SRTM ).
The Saruwaged Mountains merge into the Finisterre Mountains in the west . The two mountain ranges together form a natural border between the valley of the Markham and Ramu rivers on the south side and the Vitiaz Strait (Pacific) in the north.
history
During their rule over the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Land at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, the Germans undertook some exploratory trips into the mountains. First climbs by Europeans took place in the Sarawaged massif by Keyer in 1913 and by Lane-Poole in 1925; for these summit tours, paths through the dense tropical rainforest had to be explored for the first time.
