The Huon Peninsula ( English Huon Peninsula ) is a large peninsula on the east coast of the island of New Guinea . It forms the northern part of the Morobe Province in Papua New Guinea . The peninsula was named after the French explorer Jean-Michel Huon de Kermadec .

Location and nature

The coastal terraces of the Huon Peninsula could be included in the UNESCO World Heritage List under the name: Houn Terraces - Stairway to the Past . The area is objects that both criteria of cultural and combines the natural heritage, on the suggestion list since 2006 in the category Mixed ( Tentative List ) Papua New Guinea World Heritage Site. The coastal terraces are an important testimony to the history of geoclimatic conditions over the past 300,000 years in the Pacific region and in the world.

YUS nature reserve

In 2008, KfW Development Bank financed a nature reserve with an area of ​​76,000 hectares on the Huon Peninsula with a total project volume (including BMU funding) of € 4,800,000 on behalf of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) . KfW's project partner for the YUS nature reserve on the Huon Peninsula is the US nature conservation organization Conservation International , Washington , National Geographic and the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle . The abbreviation YUS stands for the three main rivers in the region - Yupno, Uruwa and Som.

Funds from the auctioning of CO 2 emission rights were used to fund the project, which is intended to combine nature conservation and rural development, as part of the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the BMU . The project area is considered to be an important carbon reservoir. It is the habitat of the only native Matschie tree kangaroo .

The YUS region comprises thirteen village districts with around 10,000 residents belonging to three language groups. The people farm and hunt for their own use. As part of the project, the local communities and municipalities committed themselves to the sustainable use of forests and the protection of biodiversity. In return, they receive medical care and educational benefits.
