Wolfgang Albers (born August 2, 1950 in Essen ) is a German politician of the Die Linke party and member of the Berlin House of Representatives .

Life and work

After graduating from high school in 1970, Wolfgang Albers began studying medicine in Marburg in 1974 , which he then continued at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster , where he completed his state examination and doctorate in 1980.

In 1981 he began his training as a surgeon at the Humboldt Hospital in Berlin-Reinickendorf . As part of this training, he also sat in for six months in cardiac surgery at the German Heart Center Berlin . In 1990 he was recognized as a "doctor for surgery" and then continued to work as a senior physician in general and vascular surgery at the Humboldt Hospital. In 2000, Albers was elected to the Humboldt Hospital's staff council for the first time. After the merger of all nine formerly public hospitals in Berlin to form the Vivantes hospital group , he remains a member of the group works council. From 2002 to May 2008 he was also an elected delegate in the Berlin Medical Association . He has been in retirement since January 1, 2016.

In June 2005 he joined the WASG , in May 2006 he also became a member of the Linkspartei.PDS. In June 2007 the Linkspartei.PDS renamed itself to Die Linke . From 2007 to 2011 he was deputy state chairman of the party Die Linke in Berlin. In September 2006 he became a member of the Berlin House of Representatives . He is a member of the Committee on Health, Environment and Consumer Protection and has been its chairman since January 2012. He was also a member of the Science and Research Committee, of which he was Deputy Chairman until January 2012. From 2006 to 2015 Albers was a member of the parliamentary group's executive committee and health and science policy spokesman for his parliamentary group. He has also been a member of the Interior Committee since 2016.

In the House of Representatives elections in September 2011 and in the House of Representatives elections in September 2016, he won the direct mandate for his party in the Lichtenberg 2 constituency .
