The Saryesik-Atyrau Desert ( Kazakh Сарыесікатырау ; Russian Сарыесик-Атырау, Сары-Ишикотрау Sary-Ischikotrau ) is located in Central Asia in the south of Kazakhstan .

The Saryesik-Atyrau Desert is a sandy desert that stretches between the rivers of Ili in the west and Qara Valley in the east, south of Lake Balkhash. In the western part there is a landscape of sand hills, which is cut through by dry valleys ( Bakanas ), previously dried up rivers of the Ili.

In the west mainly Saxaul bushes grow, in the east, however, European horned melde , Calligonum , mugwort and seaweed . The river valleys of Ili and Qara valley are characterized by the Tugai vegetation.
