Extension

The new building of the Sauerland Museum in Arnsberg 2019

The renovation and expansion of the Sauerland Museum into a "Museum and Culture Forum South Westphalia" is a 2013 Regionale project . After the project received the 1st and 2nd star of the Regionale 2013 as part of a qualification process in 2009/2010, a Europe-wide architectural competition was carried out in 2011/2012. The winner of this competition was the Leipzig office "schulz & schulz architects GmbH".

As part of a VOF procedure, an award committee chaired by District Administrator Dr. Karl Schneider decided that the 2nd prize winner of the architectural competition, the Bez + Kock Architects from Stuttgart, would be commissioned to convert and expand the Sauerland Museum into a "Museum and Culture Forum South Westphalia".

Due to the unclear funding situation, the district council of the Hochsauerlandkreis was only able to submit a final proposal for a decision on June 21, 2013. With a clear majority of 38:13 votes, the district council decided to implement the "Museum and Culture Forum South Westphalia". The Committee of the Regionale 2013 also gave the "green light" for the expansion of the Sauerland Museum on July 17, 2013 with the award of the 3rd star.

A total of 13.5 million euros were invested in the new building complex on Ruhrstrasse and the modernization of the existing museum rooms in Landsberger Hof. The extension building, clad with Gauinger travertine, is located on a steeply sloping hillside property and is connected to the existing museum via a bridge-like connection in the first basement of the Landsberger Hof. From there it descends on three levels - from north to south - down to Ruhrstraße, which is around 22 meters below, where the main building mass of the museum is located with the large exhibition hall. The new building, which was officially opened on September 1, 2019, offers an exhibition area of 530 square meters.

In the course of this planning, the neighboring Blue House was rebuilt. Among other things, the administration of the museum is located there.
