As oxygen fluoride (often erroneously as fluorine oxides ) are designated compounds consisting only of oxygen (O) and fluorine (F) are made. They decompose on contact with water to form highly toxic hydrogen fluoride and oxygen.

Because of this and their effect as strong oxidizing agents , oxygen fluorides are extremely dangerous for humans and animals, so they should only be handled with extreme caution and suitable protective clothing (including respiratory protection ).
